Ixtapa Mexico

LOCATION & HISTORY :

Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is located in the northwestern region of the State of Guerrero. The area is located north of Acapulco and south of Puerto Vallarta on the pacific coast. It is a few hours southwest of Mexico City and Guadalajara, which allows for convenient access to Mexico’s wealthy families and air access is good for the typical North American visitor from the U.S. and Canada Set against the green backdrop of the sheltering Sierra Madre del Sur mountains, the greater Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area runs along some 17 iles of scenic coastline with sandy beaches, quiet lagoons, scalloped oves, rocky bluffs and offshore islets.

Ixtapa - Zihuatenejo

The word lxtapa is a Nahuatl Indian word meaning the white place, alluding to the color of the beach. lxtapa is the newly developed resort zone and Zihuatanejo is
the historic village. Ixtapa is a government planned tourist resort that was begun in the early 1970s and constructed on what was once a coconut plantation and mangrove
estuary. Zihuatanejo reported a population of 62,367 in the 2005 Mexican census, whereas the population of Ixtapa was 6,406 persons. Together the two cities offer a wonderful mix of Mexico's hospitality and history.

�� The Government of Mexico took a dedicated step towards promotion of Tourism Industry with setting up FONATUR in 1970. Ixtapa/ Zihuatanejo is one of four targeted resort growth areas of Mexico as determined by FONATUR.
